About ADHD

What is ADHD?

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, activity levels and impulse control. It starts in childhood and, for many people, continues into adulthood. In adults it often looks less like hyperactivity and more like difficulty staying focused, getting organised and finishing tasks.

What are common signs of ADHD in adults?

Common signs include:

  • Losing focus, especially on tasks that are not interesting
  • Starting many things but finishing few
  • Forgetting appointments, deadlines or where you put things
  • Difficulty organising your time, work or home
  • Feeling restless, or finding it hard to relax
  • Interrupting others or acting before thinking
  • Strong emotions that come on quickly

Everyone experiences some of these sometimes. In ADHD they are frequent, have been there since childhood, and affect daily life in more than one area.

Can ADHD be diagnosed in adulthood?

Yes. Many adults in Ireland are diagnosed for the first time in their twenties, thirties or later. To meet the diagnostic criteria, symptoms need to have started in childhood, even if nobody noticed them at the time. Your assessment looks at both your childhood and your adult life.

Is ADHD different in women?

ADHD is often missed in women and girls, as it more commonly shows up as inattention, overwhelm and anxiety rather than obvious hyperactivity. Many women are diagnosed later in life, sometimes after a child is diagnosed or during a period of big change.

What types of ADHD are there?

ADHD is described in three presentations: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive and impulsive, and combined. Your diagnostic report will state which presentation, if any, fits your experience.

The ADHD assessment

What is included in the €440 assessment?

Your full adult ADHD assessment includes:

  • An online new client form, completed before your appointment
  • A 90 minute diagnostic interview by video with a PSI registered psychologist
  • The DIVA-5 structured interview, covering your symptoms in childhood and adulthood
  • A review of how your symptoms affect work, study, relationships and daily life
  • Consideration of other conditions that can look like ADHD
  • A full written diagnostic report, including the outcome, diagnostic codes and severity
  • Recommendations and next steps, such as treatment options, therapy or workplace supports
  • Your report sent to you by secure link
  • The option to see our consultant psychiatrist afterwards to discuss medication

You pay €440 when you book, or 3 × €146.67 with Klarna.

What is the DIVA-5?

The DIVA-5 is a structured diagnostic interview for adult ADHD, based on the DSM-5 criteria. Your psychologist goes through each symptom with you, with real life examples from childhood and adulthood, so the diagnosis is thorough and evidence based.

How do I prepare for my assessment?
  • Complete your new client form before the appointment
  • Join from a quiet, private room with a stable internet connection
  • Have any school reports or previous assessments nearby if you have them
  • If possible, think about what you were like as a child, or ask a parent or someone who knew you then
When will I get my report?

Your psychologist writes your diagnostic report after your assessment. When it is finished, we email you a secure link to view and download it. To open it, you enter your date of birth.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly online. If you would like your GP to know, add their details in your new client form and you can share your report with them.

What if the assessment does not find ADHD?

Your report will still explain what the assessment found and recommend next steps. Sometimes difficulties with focus are better explained by something else, such as anxiety, low mood or sleep problems, and your report will point you towards the right support.

Medication and psychiatry

Can I receive medication after my ADHD assessment?

Yes. Once your assessment with ADHD Point is complete, you can book an initial consultation with our IMC registered consultant psychiatrist. Your psychiatrist reviews your diagnostic report, checks your physical health, including your heart, and can prescribe ADHD medication if it is right for you. Your prescription is sent directly to your pharmacy.

Book an initial psychiatrist consultation

How much does ADHD treatment cost?
  • Initial consultant psychiatrist appointment: €180 (30 minutes)
  • Follow-up appointment: €120 (15 minutes)
  • Repeat prescription for stable patients: €40, covering up to 3 months

See all services and fees.

Will I need follow-up appointments?

Yes. When you start medication, your psychiatrist will see you for follow-ups to check how it is working, review any side effects and check your blood pressure, heart rate and weight. Once your medication and dose are stable, you may be able to get repeat prescriptions without an appointment.

Can I see the psychiatrist if I was assessed somewhere else?

At the moment our psychiatry appointments are for clients who completed their ADHD assessment with ADHD Point, so your psychiatrist has your full report before you meet.

Is medication the only treatment?

No. Many people find a combination works best, such as medication, therapy, coaching and practical changes at work or college. We also offer one to one therapy with a psychologist.

Booking and payment

Is everything online?

Yes. All appointments are by secure video call, so you can be seen from anywhere in Ireland.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. Klarna is available at checkout, so you can spread the cost over 3 payments.

Can I claim the cost back?

We provide a receipt for every appointment. Depending on your plan, your health insurer may contribute to some costs, so please check your table of benefits. You can also claim tax relief at 20% through Revenue myAccount on consultant psychiatrist fees and prescribed medicines, and on your psychologist assessment if a doctor such as your GP referred you. Read our guide to tax relief on ADHD costs.
